Alumni Running Non-Profit Organization Abroad

Last summer, alumni Jessica Ryan from the Class of 2011 taught English abroad in Romania with Learning Enterprises.  Learning Enterprises connects volunteer teachers and host communities around the world in order to foster cross-cultural exchange and empower young leaders. She is now the Program Director for the country in which she taught and is running a non-profit organization abroad.

Jessica spent over two months teaching in Transylvania, in the villages of Odorheiu Secuiesc and Târgu Secuiesc. She managed her own classroom and saw up to forty students a day, ranging from four to seventeen years old. After her time in Romania, she continued traveling throughout Europe and ended her summer in Gothenburg, Sweden, where she spent a week observing Swedish elementary classrooms of various grade levels.

Today, Jessica is the Program Director of the Learning Enterprises Romania Program. She will spend this coming year organizing the program in terms of hiring a team of volunteers, matching volunteers with host families, determining the details of the program and then taking her volunteers abroad. She is very excited to continue working with Learning Enterprises and looks forward to spending a second summer in a place she now considers to be a second home.

Jessica is a teaching major at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, with an emphasis in Environmental Education. She has aspirations of working as an elementary school teacher, both abroad and in the United States. She is a Transfer Center Liaison for Cal Poly’s Association of Transfer Students, and composed a letter to Cal Poly on behalf of ATS requesting a Transfer Center, which has now been newly opened. Jessica has worked for St. Angela Merici Parish School since 2016.
