SAM Mathletes Compete

SAM Mathletes Compete
Five St. Angela Merici students recently competed in the 7th annual Damien High School Math Competition against 320 other students from 22 schools.  Our five competitors, Michael, Matthew, Jenna, Luke and Connor, had their mathematics skills put to the test.  Each team member was assigned one of four mathematics disciplines to compete in: Arithmetic, Algebra, Logic & Reasoning, and Geometry.   All students did a great job representing our school.  Michael placed FIRST out of 48 Eighth Graders on the Algebra Individual Subject Exam, and also got FOURTH place out of 131 Eighth Graders in the Math Medley.  Connor placed SECOND out of 39 Seventh Graders on the Arithmetic Subject Exam and placed THIRD PLACE in the Super Quiz Bowl.  Check out the video below for some highlights of the day:

Where is the Love Video Project

Where is the Love Video Project
St. Angela 8th graders created this video as part of a group project entitled "Where is the Love".   Students were asked to contrast the priorities of a secular society with those of the Church, brainstorm ideas on how human dignity is disrespected in our world, and then create a video using the song "Where is the Love" from the Black-Eyed Peas.  Students gathered both negative and positive images that demonstrated both disrespect and respect of human dignity, and used them with the lyrics of the song.  Students also wrote a reflection and presented their project to the rest of the class.

You Be The Chemist State Champion

You Be The Chemist State Champion
St. Angela student Jenna M. demonstrated her mastery of chemistry by competing in and winning the California You-Be-The-Chemist Competition.   The 7th grader won her school competition for the second year in a row, and came in first at the California State Competition that was held in Orange County, beating out other talented middle schoolers from across the state. By winning the state competition, Jenna was invited to the National Championship in Philadelphia, PA.  In this competition, she faced the top students from around the county.  Jenna again did an outstanding job, finishing in the top 39 out of over 50,000 competitors.  Congratulations Jenna! Check out the interview with Jenna at 3:15 minutes into this video:

Robotics Team Brings Home Bronze

Robotics Team Brings Home Bronze
Five St. Angela students came together to form the Coding Cougars Robotics Team.  This team assembled and programmed a small robot and entered the 1st annual Damien High School Robotics Competition for Jr. High Students.  The competition included three challenges: programming your robot to dance to music, programming your robot to read contact sensors and successfully navigate through a maze, and programming your robot to read photo light sensors to traverse a black line through obstacles.  The students had 5 weeks to learn how to operate and program the robot, and to create programs for each of the challenges.  Small modifications were performed at the competition to adapt to the new variables presented. The Coding Cougars brought home the bronze metal at the end of the competition, beating out 21 other schools.

Pack 811 Go Karts Race to Victory!

Pack 811 Go Karts Race to Victory!
Saturday’s gray skies and threatening clouds weren’t enough to keep Pack 811 families from enjoying a thrilling day at the races!  Nestled in the charming North Hills area of Brea with the sounds of cheers and applause from fans of every age, Pack 811 Scouts zoomed down the raceway on Oakcrest Avenue, powered only by eagerness, determination, and gravity.   The Go Karts, hand built by Scouts and their parent pit crews, survived the rugged asphalt course and earned each of their drivers a place in the annals of pack race history. The race would not have been possible without the kindness of the friendly residents Oakcrest Avenue.  A special thank you goes to Vicky and David Ladjevic for obtaining permission from their neighbors to make use of their street for the day.    An event such as this is never possible without the effort of many helpful volunteers, including a few special siblings (Matthew R., Bradon H., Alizea H.) who hauled weights and go-karts up the hill dozens of times!  The Pack would also like to thank all of the parents who assisted with set-up, clean-up and hauling of materials for the event. Nineteen teams competed for design awards.  The...

Erupting Volcanoes

Erupting Volcanoes
The volcano science project is a fun engineering project in which student completely plan, design and create an erupting volcano.  Working in groups, 6th grade students investigated different chemical reactions in order to create a successful eruption.  This is an ending event to our volcano unit in which students have learned the causes of volcanoes and understand the building up of pressure (much like the volcanoes they create).  The ability to work with others is an integral part of this project.  Throughout the project choices must be made in design and responsibilities are delegated.  This year's 6th grade class created some very unique volcanic themes.

Troop 811 Wins Top Troop Award at Camporee!

Troop 811 Wins Top Troop Award at Camporee!
Boy Scout troop 811 enjoyed another successful Camporee in April. Camporee is an annual weekend competition in which all of the troops in our north Orange County district of Portola test their scouting skills.  We won the coveted top troop award for the event because of our campsite, participation, and teamwork. Not only did our patrols do well in the many challenge events, but we did them well in the rain! Luckily, we had delicious food served by Grubmaster Mr. Swanson and other adults. Camporee is the only campout where the adults cook for us!  They served root beer floats, tri-tip, baked beans, pancakes, and cobbler  (but not in that order). Troop 811 also won first place in the Gateway Competition, which was designed by Nick Toller and Bryce Tsuyuki, and received the Gold Award for our campsite. The top patrol for our troop was Delta Force, who scored 4th place overall. Here are the Camporee patrol event awards we received: 1st Place Map Reading– Delta Force 1st  Place Compass Course – Purple Flaming Penguins 1st  Place Snapper Fishing– Delta Force 2nd Place Lifesaving Relay – Purple Flaming Penguins 3rd Place Team Ski Race – Delta Force 4thPlace Tomahawk Throw – Vipers 4th...

STEM Heat Loss Science Project

STEM Heat Loss Science Project
In this project-based learning activity, 6th grade science students used digital technologies to measure heat loss in the home. Students used engineering skills to build an energy efficient "house", and a digital infra-red camera to measure how much heat is lost through the house.  Students saw first hand the importance of environmental conservation.
